!Gotcha!!

Public can take closer look at scanning artefacts

On Saturday May 9 between 12 and 17 PM, the public can witness the scanning of valuable objects of the collection of museumgoudA. Also on Wednesday May 6 and 13 (10-16 PM) and on Saturday May 16 (12-17 PM) the audience is welcome in a specially created room. In this room an employee of the firm Intricad is scanning objects into 3D-images. The scanning process is part of the project Gotcha! museumgoudA’s virtual collection.

museumgoudA wants to make its collection available to the widest possible audience of people, covering objects from both the main collections and the museum vaults. The conversion of the collection into digital images is an important step towards achieving this goal. museumgoudA is the first museum in the Netherlands and maybe worldwide to explore the process of 3-D digitisation and to display the resulting images to the public by means of a special hands-on presentation within a dedicated room and also on the Internet via the collection registration system. An additional advantage of this process is that it enables the presentation of objects to the public that they would not otherwise get to see. The reason why this may be is that not all objects are suitable for public display, especially those that are vulnerable to damage from for instance exposure to light. By making scans and photos of such objects the museum can ensure that these precious objects are stored optimally, while at same time being available for viewing or even interacted with.

About our partners For a project as complex as this, museumgoudA has partnered with a number of professional parties, with expert knowledge of the systems it employs. Personal Space Technologies provides the hardware and software, Fometrix and Intricad their scanning expertise and Adlib Information Systems ensures that the scanned pictures are incorporated into the museums registration system.

About museumgoudA museumgoudA manages the municipal arts collection. The museum would like to be hospitable to art, artists and audience, and sees itself as an instrument to stimulate different kinds of emancipation and empowerment in our society. Therefore, the initiative to digitalize and open up (part of) the collection underlines the mission of the museum perfectly well.
