Faith

Treasures from the Rijksmuseum through today's eyes

What are your rituals? Who can you forgive? What brings you peace? Whether you’re religious or an atheist, everyone believes in something. The exhibition Faith explores what gives us a sense of stability in turbulent times. Iconic works of art from the Rijksmuseum’s collection are paired with personal stories.

Three well-known thinkers from different backgrounds curated the exhibition: writer Arnon Grunberg, human rights lawyer Naema Tahir, and columnist and host Stephan Sanders. They selected more than forty works of art that resonate with them personally and each highlight a different aspect of faith.

Colorful

Objects from different eras and cultures come together in the colorful museum galleries. From a 15th-century Judith with the Head of Holofernes by the famous painter Sandro Botticelli to a photograph of writer Gerard Reve next to a statue of the Virgin Mary by Vincent Mentzel. From a porcelain sculpture of the Greek muse Urania and a drawing of the Taj Mahal to a painting of a pensive orphan girl by Nicolaas van der Waay.

Relatable

Some works of art depict religious stories, such as the reveling ‘prodigal son’ in a painting by Frans Francken, but that is not the case for many of the objects in the exhibition. Arnon, Naema, and Stephan were allowed to browse to their hearts’ content through the Rijksmuseum’s enormous collection and made some surprising choices. The themes are consistently recognizable: belonging and coming home, goodness and beauty, guilt and redemption.

Stories from Gouda

Faith also holds local significance. In the exhibition, dozens of Gouda residents of various ages and backgrounds answer the question: ‘What gives you a sense of grounding?’ They share their own stories alongside personal objects, ranging from a well-used camera and a ring with a special message to a prayer shawl belonging to a wise father.

De Volkskrant wrote the following about the Gouda section of the exhibition:
“Here you see just how much emotion objects can carry — almost as if they were an extension of people. How they can play a vital role in experiencing faith, hope, and love.”

Activities

As part of the Faith exhibition, there’s plenty to do at the museum and around town. From a workshop on creating rituals to a theatrical tasting session where we explore the ‘taste’ of faith. Or join us on an excursion to one of the city’s places of worship, from the Assalam Mosque to the HAVEN51 Yoga Center. Visit the Easter Breakfast on the Markt or participate in a talent program at the Goudse Schouwburg. And this spring, the Goudse Preek van de Leek is dedicating a special series to the ‘Faith’ exhibition!

Faith, Hope, and Love

The exhibition ‘Faith’ is the first part of the trilogy ‘Faith, Hope, and Love’,  a series of traveling exhibitions organized by six collaborating Dutch museums (the M6) and made possible by the Rijksmuseum. The VriendenLoterij is the main partner of the trilogy; the exhibition “Faith” is supported by the Mondriaan Fonds.
