From September, Museum Gouda will be hosting a solo exhibition by Mina Abouzahra (1977), whose work combines the vibrant traditions of Moroccan craftsmanship and contemporary Dutch design.
Born in the Netherlands to Moroccan parents, Mina Abouzahra grew up immersed in two cultures, an experience that continues to shape and inspire her work. While studying at the Hout- en Meubileringscollege, she spent time working in Morocco, where she became captivated by a rich world of crafts, colours and traditions.
Handmade rugs
Since 2013, Mina has run a design studio based in both Amsterdam and Morocco. In Taznakht, she collaborates with a women’s weaving cooperative, where skilled craftswomen create beautiful handmade rugs. Mina is also committed to ensuring fair working conditions and equitable pay for the weavers.
The furniture and rugs on display reflect Mina’s approach to interior and product design: a fusion of cultures, natural materials, vibrant colours, and the modern with the traditional. Her work celebrates cultural heritage while empowering female artisans and their communities through fair business practices. This distinctive approach reflects everything that Mina loves.
Wonder Walls
In parallel with this solo exhibition, Museum Gouda is hosting the major autumn exhibition Wonder Walls, which explores the rich history of Gouda’s weaving industry. Among the works on display are cushions woven in Taznakht, contemporary interpretations of historic guild cushions that Mina designs together with present-day communities.
