Pieter Pourbus. Master Painter from Gouda
Pieter Pourbus is one of the best 16th-centrury painters from the Low Countries. He was born in Gouda and gained fame in Bruges. He is virtually unknown in the Netherlands. Museum Gouda wants to change this and places the painter centre stage. This is the first time Pieter Pourbus is paid homage in the Netherlands with an exhibition. It is therefore no surprise that many paintings can be seen in our country for the first time.

Turbulent times
Pourbus lived during a pivotal point in history that saw unprecedented religious disputes. It was the time of the rise of Luther, the storming of churches, and the conversion to Protestantism of the Northern Low Countries. These social changes come to life in Museum Gouda with a collection of sixteenth-century altarpieces that survived these turbulent times, which is unique for the Netherlands! Two of these altarpieces were painted by Pieter Pourbus, including one for the Church of Saint John nearby. This is one of the highlights of the exhibition.

Unique paintings
In addition to the altarpieces from the museum’s own collection, spectacular items on loan from the Netherlands and abroad will be shown: monumental altarpieces and splendid portraits, often full of symbolism. That society changed dramatically during Pourbus’ lifetime can be discerned in his paintings: they still feature medieval characteristics, but the renaissance is echoed as well. The paintings by Pieter Pourbus provide a unique insight into both the artist and his time.
The exhibition is a collaboration project with the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.
